Tom Lampe, Photos, Pruitt-Igoe, Urban Eats

Photographer Tom Lampe currently has photos of the former Pruitt-Igoe site hanging at Urban East, 3301 Meramec, St. Louis, 63118. The space has four seperate gallery rooms and each weekend of the month, one of the artists hosts a Saturday afternoon opening. For Tom, that means a Saturday, November 21 affair, from 4-7 p.m. But, as noted, the pieces are already hanging and you can enjoy them, at your leisure, any time in November.

(Tip: Save room for a smoothie.)

National City Stockyards: Demolition

The pens at the National City Stockyards have been essentially demolished, large piles of rebar, concrete and wood now stacked in dozen-foot-high piles along the border of East St. Louis. The pens were visited by the UEU314 only a month, or so, back and the vision of them in their current state was quite a shock to the system, for sure.

Certainly, some local blogs will check in with further info, soon. We'll link when those are up.

Photos at Urban Eats

Having finally gone to Urban Eats, we're now fans of the South Side cafe, coffeeshop and events space. Possibly the most unique aspect of the place is the sequence of rooms along one side of the business, each one given over to a different artist's work. For the remainder of November, UEU sympathizer Tom Lampe is offering a selection of photography from a visit to East St. Louis' crumbling Murphy Building. They're quite striking.

In November, he'll be back with more abandonment-inspired photography, this time highlighting a visit to Pruitt-Igoe.

Drop by Urban Eats for the art and food on almost every Saturday afternoon, as mini-openings take place each weekend, as each artist is featured for a few hours on Saturdays. Fun spot.

More Zombie Road

Since it's the season for spooky stuff, here's another round of Zombie Road information, compliments of the Paranormal Task Force.

Some of the photos look at little too, mmm, touched-up for my tastes, but having seen orbs in some shots from a recent trip under the Lemp Brewery, those are pretty exciting.

According to one source, there's a $600 trespassing fine floating around for ZR visitors. Now THAT is a scary possibility.

Zombie Road

We encourage our younger brothers and sisters, especially out in the 'burbs, to get their feet wet in the UE game with some mild trespassing in areas of local interest. But it sounds like too many of this constituency are getting nabbed by the local gendarmes in Ellisville and Wildwood, where "Zombie Road" is bringing in dozens of nocturnal seekers.

There's an entertaining article in the Suburban Journals about local efforts to eradicate the scourge of youthful searchers.

For a backgrounder on the Zombie Road, we recommend this thorough read at prairieghosts.com.

As always, the truism is true: in areas of little crime, the local police force often has more time on its hands than work, so beware of trumped-up worries in such communities. Wait 'til after Halloween for a relaxing walk down the Zombie Road.

Contact Established by Pulitzer Foundation!

The Pulitzer is especially trying to connect with those with a deep interest in St. Louis' urban landscape, since we hope this exhibition will add to the current discussion on the state of St. Louis. We're even having a series of panel discussions concerning neighborhood revitalization, which you can read a little bit about on our growing Community Engagement website, Transformation: http://mattaclark.pulitzerarts.org/transformation/your-saint-louis/.

Also on that site, you'll find "Your Saint Louis," which is a project we're particularly excited about, since it invites anyone in St. Louis to share his or her neighborhood's story and to create a walking tour. Perhaps UEU314 could do an anonymous Lemp cave photo tour.

The Urban Alchemy web catalog is just http://mattaclark.pulitzerarts.org/. As always, people can get updates of behind-the-scenes activities directly on our blog: http://2buildings1blog.org/pulitzer/.
